In today’s world, the conversation about wealth often leads to questions about faith, salvation, and our relationship with God. This week, we reflect on the story of the rich young ruler as recounted in Mark 10:17-27, where Jesus challenges our perceptions of wealth and spiritual fulfillment.
The Encounter with the Rich Young RulerA rich young man approached Jesus, eager to learn how to attain eternal life. Despite his apparent devotion and adherence to religious laws, Jesus saw through his façade. He challenged him to sell his possessions and follow Him, highlighting that his true idol was his wealth. Sadly, the young man left grieving, overwhelmed by the thought of relinquishing his earthly treasures. The Battle of IdolsThis story illustrates the internal struggle many face between devotion to God and attachment to worldly possessions. Jesus emphasizes a crucial point: true life cannot be attained through wealth or religious acts alone; it comes from a heart aligned with Him. As followers of Christ, we must ask ourselves: What are our "prized possessions"? What holds our hearts captive? The Dangers of WealthJesus’ teaching continues as He explains to His disciples how challenging it is for the wealthy to enter the Kingdom of God, using the metaphor of a camel passing through the eye of a needle. This hyperbolic statement reflects the impossibility of salvation through human effort alone, underscoring that salvation is a divine gift. Salvation: A Divine PossibilityThe stunning truth is that while it is impossible for us to earn salvation, with God, all things are possible. Jesus’ sacrifice makes it clear that true salvation comes not from our actions but through faith in Him. Practical Takeaways

In our new series “Prized Possessions,” we’re diving deep into one of the most uncomfortable questions Jesus forces every follower to face:
Is Jesus actually greater than the things I love most? The Story You Know (But Maybe Haven’t Felt Yet) A rich young ruler runs up to Jesus, kneels, and asks the ultimate question: “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus lists several of the Ten Commandments. The man confidently replies, “I’ve kept all these since I was young.” Then comes the bombshell: “You lack one thing: Go, sell all you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (Mark 10:21) The man’s face falls. He walks away grieving—because he had great wealth. Jesus didn’t say this because money itself is evil. He said it because He loved the man enough to expose the real god on the throne of his heart. Two Life-Changing Truths from This Encounter 1. The Law Is a Mirror, Not a Ladder Most of us treat God’s commands like a checklist to climb into heaven. The rich young ruler did too. But Jesus uses the law as a diagnostic tool—a mirror that reveals we can never be “good enough” on our own. The law doesn’t save us. It shows us why we desperately need a Savior who already kept the law perfectly and paid the penalty for our failure on the cross. Good news: Eternal life isn’t earned—it’s received as a gift through faith in Jesus. 2. Is Jesus Greater Than Your Possessions? We may not bow down to golden calves, but modern idols have new names:
Quick heart check: How much mental energy do you give to making, spending, or worrying about money compared to prayer and Scripture? When was the last time you sacrificially gave in a way that actually hurt a little? If we’re honest, many of us live in the top 3-5% of global wealth (running water, electricity, a car, a smartphone)—yet we still clutch our stuff like it’s our true source of life. Jesus isn’t after your money. He’s after your heart. Because He knows nothing this world offers can compare with knowing Him. What Now? This passage isn’t calling every Christian to liquidate their bank account today. But it is calling every Christian to ask: “If Jesus asked me to let go of ______, would I walk away sad like the rich young ruler?” The gospel invitation is the same today as it was 2,000 years ago: Come. Treasure Christ above everything. Follow the King who left the riches of heaven to give you true, eternal wealth.
