Merry Christmas everyone!
What a wonderful time of the year to reflect on the greatest gift ever given! As you sit around the tree and pass gifts around, as you sit at the table and eat all that delicious food with loved ones, remember the most precious gift. The gift of Jesus Christ! God, in his infinite love and mercy, sends Jesus to live the life we could not live and die the death that we deserve. In Christ we can experience the forgiveness of our sins and redemption with the Father.

The truth is we are very blessed! So many gifts were handed out and received. And we are grateful to God and all the friends and family that were so generous in their gift giving.

As a church, we too wanted to be generous and give to some families who may not have had as many gifts under the tree this year. While we wish we could do so much more, that will not stop us from doing what we can. Two beautiful families in BedStuy were able to receive gifts from Swerve Church this Christmas. We will lead the way with irrational generosity because we truly believe it is more blessed to give than to receive.

We have an amazing opportunity to partner with Hope For New York via His Toy Store this Saturday! This is when churches and organizations get together to provide a unique shopping experience for families in need throughout the city. Families can come and shop at no cost. And specifically there will be a store hosted right here in Bushwick!

So this Saturday you can volunteer to help setup the shop and serve the families of Bushwick. Here's the schedule for the day:

11:30AM-12PM - Volunteers Arrive
12:00-12:15PM - Volunteer Orientation
12:15-12:30PM - Divide and Assign Roles
12:30PM-2:00PM - Family Shopping Time!
2:30PM-3:00PM - Food, clean up, depart.

As a church we are passionate about being the hands and feet of Jesus and seeking out opportunities to serve our community, Bushwick. What a great way to do just that!

I hope that everyone had a fun and safe Halloween weekend. I wanted to share the above video. We had a great time this past weekend out and about serving our community in very practical ways. We often get asked why we do what we do. Especially on a day like Halloween.

My question to you is, what other day in the year do you have all your neighbors out with their family accepting candy from strangers? Growing up we were taught to fear the day and stay home locked away. Now, to be fair, growing up in Bushwick, there were definitely safety concerns. I remember when I was in High School there were always rumors that X gang would be fight Y gang in the park after school. Or I remember in Middle School that the seniors would be egging all the freshman that day. There were definite concerns.

Today, I see it as an opportunity to interact with as much of my neighbors as possible. So we head to the park and give candy out to trick or treaters and take free family photos. This year we even added some games that children could play to win some prizes. All this is an excuse to do two things:

1. Show the love of Jesus in a practical way.
2. Create an opportunity to build a relationship with the people of our community.

I hope this helps explain a little of why we do what we do. I'd love to give you ann opportunity to join us next time. Help us love the people of our neighborhood in practical ways. Help us connect with more of our neighbors. We truly believe that this will lead to opportunities to share the hope we have in Jesus.

What a phenomenal time at our first gathering of the fall! We gathered at Irving Square Park right here in Bushwick for a time of prayer, encouragement from the Bible, fun and games, and some vision for where we're going.

If you weren't able to make it here are a few of the highlights:

• We celebrated all the opportunities to serve our community this summer.
• There will be some more awesome opportunities to serve this fall including the Halloween Outreach and Operation Christmas Child.
• Gatherings will continue on a weekly basis as we prepare for launch.

Leading up to the fall we will continue to serve not only Bushwick but other parts of North Brooklyn as we hang some more nets at local courts. SO far this summer we've hung 13 nets! We're hoping to have over 20 hung leading up into the fall.

Swerve Church is a new church plant forming in the community of Bushwick in Brooklyn.

We're starting a new initiative called "Bushwick Love Week" which will start next week July 20 - 25. With this we would love to ask, what could you do to serve a neighbor or your community during Bushwick Love Week? Here's a few of the things we'll be doing:

• Park cleanups
• Adopt-a-blocks
• Cleaning business windows
• Hanging basketball nets
• A BBQ for a local shelter
• Paint the fence for a local shelter
• Water and granola bar giveaways

We'd love to hear what ideas you  have to serve someone next week. Let's start a servolution. The Bible teaches us to "serve one another in love" (Gal. 5:13). So why not join the initiative and serve a neighbor, a friend, family member, or your community?

It's been a while since we've posted here on the blog. Mostly because we've really hit the summer full steam and head on. So far the summer has been full of opportunities to serve our neighbors and community.

Check out the highlights from the Bushwick CityFest. Though it was a rainy afternoon, that didn't keep people from spending time out at Irving Square Park right here in Bushwick. We had live music, activities for the kids, awesome BMX stunt bikes, and free food!

This Saturday we will be at Irving Square Park right here in Bushwick Brooklyn for CityFest! It will be a fun time of live music, free food, live action sports, and activities for the kids.

Who can you invite? This is a great event to invite you family, friends, and neighbors to. Along with all the great activities the gospel will be shared. We're praying for many people to surrender their lives to Jesus.

You can also come to help us serve. We'll be giving away bottled water and granola bars as a practical way to serve and love on our community. If you want to help, simply look for the blue Swerve Church tent. Well have out flag out as well. What an awesome opportunity to serve our neighbors but also to strike up some conversation with people.

We're all about loving God, loving people, and serving our community. We had a very practical opportunity to serve our neighbors at the 3rd Annual Shape Up Bushwick.

Every year for Brooklyn/Queens Day the residents of Bushwick get together to celebrate a short march around the neighborhood and enjoy some festivities at Irving Square Park. This year, we were able to participate and set up a table where we offered free waters to anyone who was thirsty.

It's is really a part of our DNA to seek our opportunities to serve our community in tangible and practical way. While we were there we were also able to get to meet some of our neighbors and tell them a little about the new church coming to Bushwick.

This summer is full of opportunities to serve and invite others to be a part of this new life-giving, gospel-centered church in the community of Bushwick. Be sure to stay plugged in via Facebook, Twitter, or sign up for our email newsletter.

Swerve Church is a new church forming in the community of Bushwick in Brooklyn, NYC. 

The Basketball Nets Outreach was birthed in the summer of 2014. Basketball in the city is huge. On any given summer day you can pass by a court and see pickup games going on. Most basketball courts however do not have nets. Last year we visited 3 parks to hang up a total of 11 nets. This year by God’s grace we will be able to do way more, even extending our reach beyond Bushwick. Here’s what we do:

•  HANG - We provide and hang up nets for our local parks. This year we plan to visit parks in Bushwick, East Williamsburg, Bed Stuy, East NY, and Ridgewood.
  
• GIVE - We giveaway free bottles of water to all the players and families throughout the park.
• PLAY - After hanging the nets we stick around to play a game or two. This is used as an opportunity to meet the people at the park. You never know what relationships may begin and what gospel conversations may be had.

This is such a simple and practical way to serve the needs of our community. At the same time, the nets add a certain look to the court that helps to beautify the park letting people know that they are valuable. We are looking forward to all that God has in store for us this summer.
